{"id":435,"date":"2009-09-29T23:35:43","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T15:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alunwk.com\/?p=435"},"modified":"2009-09-29T23:35:43","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T15:35:43","slug":"applying-to-graduate-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wukan.me\/?p=435","title":{"rendered":"APPLYING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Original HTML Version\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/polaris.gseis.ucla.edu\/pagre\/grad-school.html\">http:\/\/polaris.gseis.ucla.edu\/pagre\/grad-school.html<\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>On this page you will be asked to explain why you want to\u00a0go to graduate school, including some idea about what sort of research you would like to conduct.<\/li>\n<li>Your statement should demonstrate that you know what research is, that you have had at least one\u00a0idea in your life, and that you have an interesting and tractable idea about your research for the\u00a0future.<\/li>\n<li>Try to be concrete, but also include a few hedges such as &#8220;perhaps&#8221; and &#8220;these\u00a0possibilities include&#8221;.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Good writing count<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span> Project sobriety and maturity.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Don&#8217;t talk about your family or your non-professional interests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>they&#8217;re looking at hundreds of\u00a0applications and they&#8217;re only going to take a second look at the ones that stand out.<\/li>\n<li>You might write a generic statement and then edit in some\u00a0passages that fit each department, for example mentioning one of the professors there whose work\u00a0is relevant to your interests, just to show that you know what you&#8217;re doing.<\/li>\n<li>Ask\u00a0someone in your department which are the major fellowships in your area and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">apply for them all<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>For\u00a0example, you might <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recompute <\/span>your GPA without your freshman classes (many universities do this\u00a0routinely), or your GPA for upper-division courses only, or only for courses in your major.<\/li>\n<li>This strategy almost always makes a dreadful\u00a0impression, for the simple reason that professors are busy people who <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hate <\/span>it when you waste their\u00a0time.<\/li>\n<li>Send each one a customized e-mail message, no more than a few hundred words in\u00a0length.
