Argentina Tango

Time
Papers
My research interest mainly lies on three part
1.HCI part: CHI, UIST, DIS, IUI, CSCW
2.Ubicomp (HCI ∩ AI) part: Ubicomp, Pervasive, IEEE Pervasive Computing (magazine)
3.AI part: AAAI, IJCAI
Should keep reading papers published on above conference and magazine
PhD's blog
PhD1
Zhiting Xu: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~zhiting/
PhD2
Dahua Lin: http://people.csail.mit.edu/dhlin/
Passion, Passion, Passion!
Student & Research (1)
Ivan Sutherland,
Bob Frankston & Dan Brickin,
Len Kleinrock,
Bob Metcalfe,
Danny Lewin,
Mark Andreessen,
Larry Page & Sergey Brin,
Brian Josephson,
Bill Martin & Joel Moses,
Shawn Fanning,
James Watson & Francis Crick,
Bill Joy,
and David Huffman
Victor问大家:What do these people have in common?
Ivan Sutherland
Sutherland earned his Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), his Master’s degree from Caltech, and his Ph.D. from MIT in EECS in 1963.
He received the Turing Award in 1988 for the invention of Sketchpad, an early predecessor to the sort of graphical user interface that has become ubiquitous in personal computers.
Bob Frankston & Dan Briclkin
Bob Frankston graduated graduated MIT with undergraduate degrees in 1970.
Dan Bricklin received his B.S. in electrical engineering/computer science from the MIT.
Frankston and Briclkin co-created VisiCal. VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet program available for personal computers. It is often considered the application that turned the microcomputer from a hobby for computer enthusiasts into a serious business tool.
Len Kleinrock
Kleinrock received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree in 1957 from the City College of New York, and a master’s degree and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in electrical engineering & computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959 and 1963 respectively.
He made several important contributions to the field of computer networking, in particular to the theoretical side of computer networking. His most well-known and significant work is his early work on queueing theory, which has applications in many fields, among them as a key mathematical background to packet switching, the basic technology behind the Internet.
His initial contribution to this field was his doctoral thesis in 1962.
Bob Metcalfe
Metcalfe graduated from MIT in 1969 with two B.S. degrees, one in Electrical Engineering and the other in Industrial Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He then went to Harvard for graduate school, earning his M.S. in 1970.
He co-invented Ethernet, founded 3Com and formulated Metcalfe’s Law.
Danny Lewin
In 1995, he traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to begin graduate studies toward a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996. While there, he and his advisor, Professor F. Thomson Leighton, came up with innovative algorithms for optimizing Internet traffic. These algorithms became the basis for Akamai, which the two founded in 1998.
Mark Andreessen
Andreessen received his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He co-author of Mosaic, the first widely-used web browser, and founder of Netscape Communications Corporation. Mosaic is famed as the first killer application that popularized the Internet.
Larry Page & Sergey Brin
Page holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the http://www.umich.edu/ with honors and a Masters degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Brin Earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, he followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps by studying mathematics, double-majoring in computer science. After graduation, he moved to Stanford to acquire a Ph.D in computer science.
Brian Josephson
Brian Josephson attended Cardiff High School and then Cambridge University, where he gained a BA in 1960. Whilst an undergraduate, he became notorious as a brilliant and self-assured student.
As an undergraduate he published a paper in which he calculated a thermal correction to the Mossbauer effect that reconciled previously different measurements of gravitational red shifts reported by teams in the US and UK. After completing his undergraduate degree he continued to study at Cambridge, and in 1964 was awarded his PhD in physics.
James Watson & Francis Crick
Watson studied at the University of Chicago and Indiana University and subsequently worked at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory in England where he first met his future collaborator and personal friend Francis Crick.
Something about Application
You may that: although you don’t have high GPA and high Standard Test Score, and your university is not known outside China, but you have strong motivation and some research background.
However, the high GPA and Top University is the BASIC to Top Graduate School. Committee will find something else from you on this base.
Students admitted to Stanford, MIT’re doing extraordinary in ALL fields. From Tsinghua Unveristy, very high GPA, lots of research work in undergraduate life, very strong recommendation letter, and they’re all with highly motivation.
Er… it seems difficult, I probably should work harder…
Being able to decide means you get to live the life that you want to.
Life is too short to live the life others do or others want you.
APPLYING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL
- On this page you will be asked to explain why you want to go to graduate school, including some idea about what sort of research you would like to conduct.
- Your statement should demonstrate that you know what research is, that you have had at least one idea in your life, and that you have an interesting and tractable idea about your research for the future.
- Try to be concrete, but also include a few hedges such as “perhaps” and “these possibilities include”. Good writing counts. Project sobriety and maturity.
- Don’t talk about your family or your non-professional interests.
- they’re looking at hundreds of applications and they’re only going to take a second look at the ones that stand out.
- You might write a generic statement and then edit in some passages that fit each department, for example mentioning one of the professors there whose work is relevant to your interests, just to show that you know what you’re doing.
- Ask someone in your department which are the major fellowships in your area and apply for them all.
- For example, you might recompute your GPA without your freshman classes (many universities do this routinely), or your GPA for upper-division courses only, or only for courses in your major.
- This strategy almost always makes a dreadful impression, for the simple reason that professors are busy people who hate it when you waste their time.
- Send each one a customized e-mail message, no more than a few hundred words in length. This message should do four things: (1) demonstrate knowledge of their research, (2) explain that you are looking for the right PhD program, (3) explain the general research area you are interested in working in, and (4) ask them whether they are taking on new students.
- Foreign students often assume that they lack “inside information” that American students enjoy, and they sometimes respond by trying to divine this information from statistics about what kinds of test scores got someone into one school or another.
